International Justice Mission x Women On A Mission

ree

Day 1 in Cebu, Philippines has been nothing short of thrilling! Upon landing, I wasted no time immersing myself in the vibrant culture of Cebu.

The day took an unexpected turn as I found myself in the limelight, sharing the mission and goals of International Justice Mission (IJM) with Cebu Daily News. It was an opportunity to shed light on the vital work of the OSEC crime unit and team, fostering awareness and understanding. Thereafter the evening unfolded into a delightful food expedition with Michelle and Edwin, who graciously played the role of welcoming hosts. Exploring the local flavours and dishes provided not just a feast for the senses but also a chance to connect with the heart of Cebu. As the day came to a close, I was warmly welcomed by the staff at the Radisson Blue Hotel. The ambience and hospitality transformed the hotel into a home away from home, adding an extra layer of comfort to the adventure that was ahead.

DAY 2: Diving into O.S.E.C

On the second day of the trip, my focus shifted to a deeper understanding of IJM (International Justice Mission) and OSEC (Online Sexual Exploitation of Children). In stark contrast to the face-to-face nature of the crimes and cases I've previously worked on, the exploitation prevalent in the Philippines unfolds entirely in the online realm. The urgency of these situations calls for immediate attention, given that the borderless realm of online exploitation has the potential to affect numerous individuals. The SCALE OF HARM study vividly portrayed the extensive prevalence of Trafficking CSAM (Child Sexual Abuse Material), revealing alarming statistics on the trafficking of filipino children. With 30% + of the demand side offenders coming from western countries, the expansive global impact of this issue, facilitated by social media platforms, underscores the necessity for collaborative international efforts.

O.S.E.C Briefing at IJM CEBU Office

There's a need for law enforcement and education to continually adapt to address Online Sexual Exploitation of Children (OSEC) issues while considering cultural influences. The underreporting, often a result of societal hurdles and recognising that OSEC as a nationwide challenge requires a comprehensive and coordinated effort. The shocking statistic that exposes 3.5 child victims per adult trafficker highlights how deeply rooted and widespread this problem is. OSEC operates as a crime of opportunity, preying on the vulnerable and voiceless. Using the rational choice theory in this situation highlights the need for urgent actions that tackle economic motives and question cultural beliefs. It mostly stems from the deep-rooted feeling of entitlement over children's lives, influenced by culture and society, These notions however can be broken through education programs in communities. Furthermore, when tackling the complex issues of fighting Online Sexual Exploitation of Children (OSEC), the importance of aftercare services is evident. These services are carefully designed to provide comprehensive support, covering Rescue, Assessment, Rehabilitation, Reintegration, and the pursuit of Freedom.

During the crucial Rescue phase, IJM places paramount importance on trauma-informed care, acknowledging the subjective impact of trauma on individuals. The subsequent assessments are geared towards identifying and addressing trauma, paving the way for rehabilitation. This may involve shelter or foster family placement, with a special focus on training foster parents. The ultimate objective is sustained restoration, successful reintegration into the community, and the attainment of freedom. Our insights from IJM shed light on the critical role of survivor leadership in shaping effective strategies. Acknowledging the invaluable perspectives derived from lived experiences, survivors are positioned as essential contributors to understanding abuse and combatting the crime. Their involvement highlights the need for survivors to have a seat at the table where decisions for change are made.

In essence, giving importance to aftercare services shows a dedication to helping OSEC survivors in a complete and personalised way. Combining trauma-informed care, survivor leadership, and specific actions in critical areas reveals a detailed plan to address the complex challenges of fighting against and recovering from online exploitation.

After a day filled with insights, my mind buzzed with thoughts on how I could further contribute to raising awareness about this issue. The van ride back to the hotel was silent, filled with contemplation about the serious matter of Online Sexual Exploitation of Children (OSEC) and how, amid all this darkness, we were striving to shed light on the issue. It serves as a reminder in our digital age, harnessing technology as a force for good is paramount, especially when it comes to combating online crimes against children. The power of technology lies not only in its ability to connect us but also in its potential to protect the most vulnerable members of our society. Leveraging innovative tools and digital solutions can play a crucial role in identifying, preventing, and addressing online threats to children. By fostering a collaborative approach between tech developers, law enforcement, and advocacy groups, we can create a safer online environment for our young ones. Embracing technology as a positive force allows us to stay one step ahead in the ongoing battle against online crimes, ensuring a brighter and more secure future for the next generation.

Day 3: Happy Horizon's Shelter Visit.

Visiting Happy Horizon's Children's Ranch was a profoundly moving experience that left a lasting impression on me. Witnessing the resilience and gratitude these children displayed towards God was truly inspiring. Operated by a family of believers, it's evident that they prioritize the spiritual resilience and growth of the children. The survivors' testimonies were powerful and evoked a deep sense of admiration for their strength in the face of challenges. A memorable aspect of the visit involved the sharing of stories and experiences among both the younger and older children. They not only shared their journeys but also wrote and sang songs of hope, reflecting a remarkable level of creativity and positivity despite their circumstances. The atmosphere was filled with a spirit of resilience and optimism.

Adding to the lively atmosphere, I had the opportunity to share a bit of my own story with the children. It was heartening to see their enthusiasm as I taught them how to catwalk, turning the moment into an enjoyable and interactive experience. The genuine joy and laughter that filled the room created a sense of connection and unity.

Following this heartwarming exchange, we partook in a traditional Filipino meal, experiencing a cultural aspect that further deepened the sense of community. The shared meal created a sense of togetherness, breaking down barriers and fostering a warm and welcoming environment. The day continued with a series of games, adding an element of fun and playfulness to the visit. It was heartening to see the children engage wholeheartedly in the activities, showcasing their exuberance and zest for life.

IG Live with Dressember

Our day concluded with the Philippine Survivor Network (PSN) Christmas dinner, an event that offered us insights through powerful testimonies. We learned about the programs and initiatives the network runs to empower these survivor leaders. I also had the opportunity to strut my stuff once more with a group of survivors and answer some questions they had.

Following that, I hurried back to the hotel for a live session with Dressember, discussing the significance of everyday advocacy and how Dressember plays a crucial role in that. Dressember is more than just a fashion movement; it's a powerful advocacy initiative with a purpose. Participants commit to wearing a dress or a tie every day / most days throughout December, using their attire as a conversation starter to raise awareness about the serious issue of human trafficking and exploitation. The challenge goes beyond fashion—it's a call to action. By donning a dress or a tie, individuals become advocates, sparking conversations, and contributing to the fight against modern-day slavery. Dressember harnesses the collective power of a community, turning a simple garment into a symbol of solidarity and a tool for change. You can be a part of the movement and join my campaign here: dressember2023.funraise.org/team/pri's-team

Wrapping up my trip, I had the incredible opportunity to explore the Love Yourself office in Cebu. Love Yourself is a non-profit organization based in the Philippines that focuses on promoting HIV awareness, providing free and confidential HIV testing, and offering support services for individuals affected by HIV/AIDS. The organization is known for its advocacy in promoting self-love and acceptance while addressing the stigma surrounding HIV. This incredible non-profit has garnered support from both Pia Wurtzbach, Miss Universe 2015, and Catriona Gray, Miss Universe 2018. The invitation to visit their facility was truly humbling, providing me with a firsthand opportunity to delve into the meaningful work they are dedicated to.

Interview with Fritz

During my visit, I delved into the various programs and initiatives they run. Additionally, I had the privilege of being interviewed by Fritz and taking a tour of their facility. Their work resonates deeply with my advocacy as victims of human trafficking and sexual exploitation can access free medical check-ups and confidential medical support through their initiatives.

Looking forward to my next visit, I'm hopeful for the chance to make a meaningful contribution and further engage with this organization.
